Phase I
Tarebhir Basic School (Primary school-up to 5th standard) isĀ  the only school in Tarebhir village. 65 kids are enrolled in the current primary school. After primary education, students have to walk more than 5 km distance, about 45 minutes to get to lower secondary and secondary education providing school. At present, 100 students go to two different schools for secondary level education: Budhanilkantha Higher Secondary school, Budhanilkanth and Suntakhan Secondary School, Suntakhan, Gokarneswor Municipality (southern side).

The primary school is still damaged by cracks due to the earthquake of 2015 and therefore poses a danger to students and teachers. Two of the classrooms are severely affected and a further three do not meet earthquake-proof building standards. Currently 56 pupils attend the primary school from first to fifth grade (4-10 years old). Tarebhir is the only primary school in the area, the nearest secondary schools can only be reached by a 5km long footpath.

By building 7 new classrooms, a computer room/library and a teachers’ room, the school can be extended to a lower secondary school, up to grade 8. In addition, with the expected additional 250 pupils in the next 5 years, more toilets (2 for girls and 2 for boys) will be needed. The construction of the classrooms, the toilets and the financing of the teaching staff for the following three years will be ensured by the Carnevali Foundation.

The local community has a 20% share in the project and will fully cover the costs for the additional teachers after three years.

Phase II
There is only one basic school in Tarebhir, the two nearest secondary schools are more than 5 km away on foot. After the 2015 earthquake, the basic school only ranged from kindergarten to fifth grade and was located in an old, damaged building. However, in 2019-20, with the help of the Carnevali Foundation, we have already been able to construct a new, earthquake-proof and beautiful building, as well as add three more classes up to eighth grade. However, in order to continue attending secondary school, about 100 young people still had to walk more than 10 km every day.

At the start of the project, 120 students (48 boys and 72 girls) attended the playgroups up to grade 8 (4 to 14 years old); they were taught by nine teachers. In order to expand the school up to the tenth grade, eleven rooms plus additional toilet rooms were planned. To this end, the old prefab building, which until then had housed the kindergarten children and a small kitchen, was replaced by a new one with three-stories. In addition to classrooms, a library, a laboratory and a computer room were also planned in order to increase the quality of education. We expect the number of students to grow to 285 in the next few years.

The municipality agreed to cover 20 % of the construction costs and to finance the additional teachers needed.
