The village of Hulchuk is located at 1,503m and is mainly inhabited by the Gurung ethnic group and some Dalit communities. It can be reached in a 2-day walk from Sotikhola. The local school, which is also attended by children from neighboring villages, had unfortunately collapsed due to the earthquake, leaving the many students in this area without access to education.
In January 2017, Chay Ya staff, a project coordinator and engineer, attended the stakeholders’ meeting at Shree Ichchhya Basic School to discuss plans for its reconstruction. With the active help of the villagers and in cooperation with the School Management Committee, eight classrooms and toilets for girls and boys were completed in merely one year. According to Nepal’s guidelines, the school was built on stone cement mortar to ensure its resistance in case of another earthquake. In June 2018, the 250 students were visibly happy about their beautiful and stable new school.
