Agricultural Report Released by Mulkot Agricultural Cooperative
The agricultural study report of the Mulkot Agricultural Cooperative has been made public. Established in 2021 (2078 B.S.) in Tulsipur-4, Mulkot, the cooperative has been working to make its members self-reliant in agriculture through the Women Empowerment Project for Livelihood, implemented by Chay-Ya Nepal.
A study was conducted on modernizing traditional agricultural practices, including seasonal and off-season farming methods. After the study, farmers reported increased crop production from commercial farming, according to Gobinda KC, an agricultural expert from Chay-Ya Nepal.
A total of 47 female shareholder members of the cooperative jointly cultivated tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, and cauliflower on 6 kaththas (approx. 0.2 hectares) of land. They are also focusing on avocado and lemon farming, he said.
Expert KC mentioned that the cooperative promotes collaborative farming among members, using research-based and result-oriented agricultural technologies. In a time when chemical fertilizer use is increasing, training has been provided on organic farming and time-appropriate techniques, he added.
According to Chairperson Jharana Pun, the cooperative has been providing members with free seeds and tunnels. A three-room concrete administrative building is under construction with the support of Chay-Ya Nepal.
Vice-Chairperson Belmati Pun shared that while members have the skills and capacity for vegetable production, they are facing problems in market access. Farmers struggle to bring their vegetables to the Tulsipur market due to difficult road conditions.
Farmer Amrit BK emphasized that in addition to production, attention should be paid to marketing. He also highlighted the health risks of pesticide use and called for promoting organic products.
Mayor Tikaram Khadka of Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City expressed concern that people are still forced to consume vegetables from external markets. He committed to supporting local farmers and promoting local production.
Deputy Mayor Syani Chaudhary stated that not only the local government but also various organizations need to collaborate on such initiatives. She stressed the importance of increasing organic production and viewed the initiative positively.
Other speakers at the event — including Ward Chairperson Tulsi Thapa of Ward No. 4, Agriculture Division Chief Dhanraj Gautam, and Principal Rajiv Ojha of Kalakhola School — emphasized the need for joint efforts to market locally produced agricultural goods.
The program was jointly organized by Mulkot Agricultural Cooperative with technical support from Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City and financial support from Chay-Ya Nepal. It was chaired by Jharana Pun (Chairperson of the Cooperative), with Mayor Tikaram Khadka as the chief guest and Deputy Mayor Syani Chaudhary as the special guest.
The program was facilitated by Shila Bogati, Program Coordinator of Chay-Ya Nepal, and managed by Ram Marhajan, who also shared information about Chay-Ya Nepal’s mission and areas of work, which include education, health, environment, good governance, livelihood, agriculture, and cooperatives.
Previously, Chay-Ya Nepal constructed a Disability Study Center building in Kalakhola, Tulsipur-7, and is currently constructing a school building at Pratapkot Secondary School in Tulsipur-3.
