Fire Victims in Mugu Receive Food Relief After Four Days

On the night of Kartik 29, a massive fire broke out in the lower market area of Gamgadhi Bazaar, Mugu district, destroying 45 houses completely. The incident left around 80 people in a state of crisis, losing all their belongings including clothing and food supplies.

Although support was provided by several government agencies, organizations, and the local government, no food aid had been distributed in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. It was only after four days that food assistance was delivered by a local organization named Chay-Ya Nepal.

According to Meen Bahadur Rawal, head of Chay-Ya Nepal Mugu, each affected household received a relief package worth NPR 3,208, which included:
• 25 kg rice
• 1 kg salt
• Lentils
• Turmeric
• Oil
• And other 8 basic food items

Rawal also stated that efforts are underway to provide further and more comprehensive support to the fire victims.

One of the victims, Thilya Lama, shared her grief saying:

“Everything my grandfather built and we owned is now burned to ashes. We have no shelter or food. How will we survive now? We are thankful to Chay-Ya Nepal and all those who have come forward to help, from any sector.”

However, she also mentioned that due to the lack of proper shelter, storing the relief food is also a challenge.

Temporary accommodation for the 25 affected families (80 people) has been arranged in nearby homes and hotels in Gamgadhi Bazaar, with coordination from Mugu Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Chhayanath Savings and Credit Cooperative.

According to Rom Bahadur Mahat, Chief District Officer of Mugu, the fire caused damage worth over NPR 350 million.
